Wow, what a result! IT sounds like things literally cam unglued! I'm surprised by the "double everything" approach...generally not that great of an idea to mess with the designer's specifications. Glad she was able to walk away. These days, rebuilding a broken wooden glider takes some time and talent.

DAVID GEO ROMBACH 18.08.2024 17:40:13

Our instructor at Eagleville bought one. The guy who built it , upsized every piece.    If it called for 1/2 " he put in 3/4 " wood , 2" went to 3" and so on.

She entered a contest at Ceasar Creek and had to land out. The field has a ditch across it she didn't see and hit it. The cockpit exploded around her. She brought it back and her condo manager let her rebuild it in a unfinished condo. she removed all parts forward of the seat back and built from there. Dont think she ever finished it.

I'm not sure what, if any, advantage/disadvatage the "Mooney" tail might have...but it does give some "style" to aircraft using it!

Peter 17.08.2024 23:21:55

Yes sad, but on the other side it's the safest way to fly. My wife has a motorcycle, many years now. But the last 10 years it's not used. We pay insurance for it and the tax, and I'm very happy she doesn't drive it.
There's a phrase that I really like: “It's better to sit on the couch and dream of flying than the other way around”. (it's the same with boats, cars, motorcycles a.s.o.)
With the "Mooney"-tail I meant the nearly perpendicular rudder

I have not flown it yet, Peter...sad about that. 34:1 is advertised LD, but I'm thinking it'll be more like 32:1. Flying the K6CR in Condor is good to help me anticipate performance. The BG has an all-flying tail like the K6E. Thank you for the video, I recognize the plane as one from New Zealand and someone I have corresponded with about the BG-12/16. That video was taken some years ago for sure, so not the quality of cameras we've got now. ;-)

Peter 17.08.2024 12:26:39

Thanks for uploading that picture again. I'm sure I wrote something to that plane last time (that was in Discord, have deleted all programs and apps since then). In my opinion it's a very beautiful plane, especially I like the "Mooney"-tail, may it have advantages or disadvantages, it looks fantastic. I read about a glide ratio of 34, it's the same like a K6E, the highest performing plane I flew IRL. Have you ever flown it since you bought it?

Found that video on youtube about a flying BG12/16, not a good quality, but you can imagine how that plane looks in the air. Interesting btw the signs the wingman gives to the tow pilot, we do it very different. IMHO your way is the better one, because you are always active and keep the focus, while we can sleep during that procedure. We hold the arm vertical - hand in the sky without any moving - until the tow is tight, then horizontal

Thank you for the tip, Peter. Yes, Dave, I've got a BG-12/16; here is a picture of it a few years before I acquired it. N4265_SideView.JPG - N4265_SideView.JPG

David 16.08.2024 14:12:19

Brad, do you have a BG 12?

Peter 16.08.2024 09:41:28

For windscreens of plexiglass a very old and for sure known trick is to polish it with toothpaste. Try it first in a little edge of the screen. I polished the glass roof of our camper that way last year, it became like new

Brad 16.08.2024 06:01:51

Have not flown the airports triangle, but that would be an interesting flight either in Condor or IRL. If IRL then you must contend with Salt Lake City airspace. I have not flown that wooden glider yet, a Briegleb BG-12/16...actually haven't flown anything this year. :-( I am working on getting the windscreen back in good shape then a new weight and balance needing to be done.

Peter 12.08.2024 19:45:29

Btw: do you have flown that nice wooden plane this year I have forgotten the name of?

Peter 12.08.2024 13:50:22

That are long distances. If you fly a triangle with those 3 airports, you fly 327 km

Unfortunately, David, not a lot of flying the past few years. When I do, it is either Morgan County, Heber City, or Nephi.

I agree, Peter, no random to life!

David 09.08.2024 14:54:42

Ahhh, so that explained it, why Peter made Cold Lake landscape. Brad, did not know you lived there. Where do you fly from now IRL?, Nephi ?

Peter 09.08.2024 08:42:11

Thanks Brad for your nice comment. I know a little bit about the region around Heber Valley because it was the first place where I flew virtual with the free version of Xtreme soaring. That was in 2020. The place is called there "Utah" and in the free version you can fly an ASK 21. Maybe three month later I started with Condor. Interesting that I met David in Xtreme Soaring the first time and you are living IRL in that region, where I flew first virtual. I don't believe there is only random in the world.

To explore that region I made the OneDesign task for next month with (I hope) good conditions out of Heber Valley. There will be wind for the ridges and good thermals and a return task, so nearly free to fly where you want. I hope we will have fun flights there (but I'm still busy in September too, have another family meeting in Germany that month)

Great work, Peter! That screenshot you posted for Utah is Heber City looking Southwest to Mount Timpanogos. A wonderfully scenic place to soar! I started soaring at Heber City back in the mid-late 1970's after moving to Utah from Cold Lake, Alberta, Canada. It'll be great to have landscapes coast-to-coast so we can fly a long Journey...I still need to try crossing the water from Bahamas to Florida to continue my journey. Looking forward to flying in my "backyard" landscape.

David 06.08.2024 23:16:32

Downloaded the Utah landscape. Very nice. If you get landscapes coast to coast, you can refly the Schmirnoff sail plane Derby that was hosted in the 70s.

Working title of the next one: Vegas. The Flying M Ranch will follow in a landscape north from this one (needed a short break from job)

Utah is done and can be downloaded from the web side. Impressive landscape with only 149 airports.

I will soon start the next landscape. If I get St. George and Los Angeles on one landscape, I have the connection to the west coast. Looks good, but I'm not sure yet. Another location I want to make is Barron Hilton's Flying M Ranch, but I don't believe I will get it on the same landscape, maybe at the border, but I want to have good space around that airport. So these are the next projects, but nothing is started just now (maybe tomorrow).
