Task K

David 01.02.2025 15:32:58

Good one with the LS , Peter .

Peter 01.02.2025 12:14:53

Nice try with the Cirrus Brad, it really seems Condor 3 had an advantage this task, will see what is better in the next one in the mountains.

Brad 25.01.2025 17:19:20

Thank you guys. I flew a but conservatively due to the widely spaced clouds and not wanting to land out again! In the end, I was fortunate with how well the flight turned out. I will upgrade to Condor 3 at some point.

David 25.01.2025 16:31:48

Yes Brad , excellent flight in the K6 ,for sure.

Peter 25.01.2025 14:00:20

Great K6 flight, Brad, well done, congratulations! We did the multi player yesterday with Condor 2, was the first time for me flying task K in C2. The conditions are much better in C3 in this task, than in C2, so it was an even better flight than it looks like on paper

Peter 24.01.2025 09:30:33

Great news, Brad. I was a little bit worried about you, good to read from you again. Very good!

So we will fly Condor 2 tonight, I planned to fly ASW20, if Brad takes part. The suggest course will follow later today

David 24.01.2025 06:54:29

Thank you , Brad .final glide was interesting at best.

Brad 24.01.2025 05:50:16

I have been busy these past couple of weeks, but was able to catch up tonight. Marvelous OneDesign flight Dave, very well done sir, congratulations!

David 16.01.2025 21:49:27

 Thank you

Peter 16.01.2025 20:48:07

Great OneDesign flight David, with a perfect final glide. Congratulations!

David 11.01.2025 15:39:50

Not a bad flight after all ,considering the weather.

Peter 11.01.2025 08:18:53

Great flight, Brad, but too sad with the last lift.

Today I flew a Journey flight with the weather of task A 2025, OneDesign will get that and the others the same but with much more wind, because we will start with a mountain task. If that doesn't work I don't know what I do. Especially OneDesign will be nice, I'm sure. Mountain tasks are always more difficult to set IMHO.

I don't promise anything, but I hope the best ;-)

Brad 03.01.2025 04:40:54

Thanks for the reminder, David...forgot about the extra month for the current task. Should have some time to fly more.

David 31.12.2024 19:33:37

Happy new Year to you all

Peter 31.12.2024 19:30:22

Thank you Brad. The LS3 is for me the best plane in the series, maybe it matches good to my flight style. On paper the ASW20 is better, but not for me. I only had to take it for the last task of the 2024 season.

Happy New Year to all of you. We have 4,5 hours left here ;-)

David 31.12.2024 15:42:30

Remember Brad, you got until the end of January to finish.

Brad 31.12.2024 15:24:43

Congratulations, Peter! That was a really excellent flight with your LS3! I have been traveling and unable to fly for a while...so I'm thinking my VS24 season is complete. Everyone enjoy your New Year's celebrations, and stay safe!

Peter 30.12.2024 10:48:06

Oxo explained that in Condor 3 "inter-thermal area sink" is added. Looks like you can add 0,2 m/s sinking on cruise over flat land. My last DG800 flight shows the same

Peter 29.12.2024 17:47:58

Thanks, the LS3 flight was a good one, I tried today the JS1-21, that was the flight I wrote about in Condor forum. Needed only the last lift to the cloud base, but got a very strong sinking until the ground, maybe the sinking bug is back ...

David 29.12.2024 17:03:38

Nice flight in the LS3 , even though you had bad lift at the end. I read the forum.

David 24.12.2024 15:12:50

Still not too bad , considering.

Peter 24.12.2024 08:27:01

Looks like a very hard flight, Brad. Maybe lots of dying clouds

David 23.12.2024 23:45:57

OK Will load it.

Peter 23.12.2024 23:22:40

I took a look at both locations. The weather in Appalachia looks much better, we should take that one

David 23.12.2024 16:47:34

I think for the SF28 flight, either Slovenia and Turnau or Appalachia and Ceasar Creek airport.

Peter 23.12.2024 16:06:55

Oh, nice, a flight from Bad Pyrmont to Wilsche, welcome AS (Nils Richter) to the Vintage Series 24

David 23.12.2024 15:53:56

Congrats to Nils on your flight.Welcome to VSC.

Peter 22.12.2024 19:52:58

Multi player for all can be then on 16th or 23th. David excluded 30th. If Brad is still on C2, wewill use C2, else we could try C3. But no pressure Brad, we can continue with C2 many years

Peter 22.12.2024 17:08:24

Ok, you define a landscape, and I will find an airport

David 22.12.2024 17:05:27

Something large , we can get back to.

Peter 22.12.2024 16:18:48

 Any airport suggestion?

David 22.12.2024 16:13:38

Thank you , I can’t hardly thermal without audio or compensation vario. The Jan 9 is good.Should be fun.

Peter 22.12.2024 16:03:17

Regarding the two seater flights, let's take the 9th of January, second is too close to the holidays. Do you want a special airport we should start from?

Peter 22.12.2024 08:27:52

Done, there is a second panel to download on the web side. Added e-vario, visible on the front seat, not visible on the back seat, vario is compensated

David 22.12.2024 06:12:40

Whatever you think, yes maybe an audio or a compensated one for sure

Brad 22.12.2024 01:25:00

Thank you for your compliments on the OneDesign flight. Yes, this one is very tricky with the 1-26. Good to know our crews are willing to come pick us out of some remote fields. ;-)

Peter 21.12.2024 23:06:53

If you wish a panel with compensated vario and maybe hidden evario, like that one I made for the Baby, just say it

David 21.12.2024 22:01:55

I think it’s the best rate of climb at gross weight.

David 21.12.2024 20:49:34

The 2,9,16, or 23

Peter 21.12.2024 20:24:26

Very good, now we have another nice plane to try the two seater. We should find a Thursday in January, now it's Christmas

David 21.12.2024 19:42:52

 Christmas gift from wife

David 21.12.2024 19:35:43

 Yes

Peter 21.12.2024 18:22:35

 Have you bought the SF28?

Peter 21.12.2024 17:11:50

Ah, I see, sorry, I don't know it

David 21.12.2024 16:49:30

Airspeed indicator

Peter 21.12.2024 16:08:44

What is an ASI?

David 21.12.2024 15:54:25

 SF

David 21.12.2024 15:54:04

what is the blue line on the ASI on the SK28?

David 21.12.2024 13:14:59

Thanks , Peter

David 21.12.2024 13:14:22

Nice flight Brad, but like the rest of us , landouts.

Peter 21.12.2024 07:13:42

Nice flight Brad, unfortunately as unlucky as we others too

Peter 21.12.2024 06:53:22

I'm not very sure if I understood your question, but I try an answer. The prop is adjustable for gliding and for flying with engine on. See the picture, above is for gliding. In Condor it's controlled by the key for to extract the engine (f.x. DG800, ASG29)
SF28prop.png - SF28prop.png

David 21.12.2024 00:09:09

Does the prop actually feather? On the SF

Peter 20.12.2024 17:22:48

 DG 1000 S

David 20.12.2024 16:38:32

 What was the other one?

Peter 20.12.2024 16:37:11

The plane I bought before was a two seater too, the DG 1000

Peter 20.12.2024 16:16:17

The SF 28, motorglider, twoseater and the first plane in Condor from Egon Scheibe. It's the same company which made my favorite plane IRL, the L-Spatz 55

David 20.12.2024 16:12:49

What plane did you buy recently ? The two seater?

Peter 20.12.2024 06:03:20

Thanks David. It was a safe flight until Harris Hill. Needed finally a last lift, but all clouds from that point died. Nevertheless I think to fly along the valley is not bad. I will try it again, was fun

David 20.12.2024 04:33:22

Great flight on one design , Peter. Lot better than mine.

Peter 16.12.2024 17:21:15

Thanks Brad for your analysis, I always like to get some background information to the flights. The dieing clouds were on my Libelle flight too on the second leg. Jumping from one dieing cloud to the next one was the only I could do to stay airborn. Finally I was lucky and it went well.

Peter 16.12.2024 11:07:50

BTW: the town next to the hill is Bad Pyrmont, the place where my mother-in-law currently lives, so little advantage for me knowing the region a little bit. In my RL gliding times Bad Pyrmont was one of the airports you could get your trainer license, don't know if it's still the case

Peter 16.12.2024 11:00:14

For the final glide I use the calculator from the web side. Defining the airport altitude gives a table at the end with needed height in QFE and QNH, I print that on paper. It works imperial too, then with nm and ft
flightcalculation.png - flightcalculation.png

Brad 16.12.2024 06:13:45

I just saw your Blanik flight, Dave...looks like a good one, well done! I agree that finding lift on this task is tricky!

Brad 16.12.2024 06:10:42

Thank you, Peter. Yes, another challenging task, even with the higher performance gliders; no worries, still fun! I tried the '20 with about half ballast to start. Climbs we OK on the first leg. I was out of sync with the lift through the second leg and only found dying clouds. Made my second turn point, dropped ballast, and headed for home...hoping to find another good lift. I managed (got lucky) to find the thermal I needed to get home and stayed with it until I had comfortable height. I stayed with the that last thermal a bit longer than necessary, but I'm a little conservative that way. ;-) I have to keep reminding myself of the finish height because it is on a hill. I also use a laptop as a map during flight. The town next to the hill helps navigation when approaching from anywhere from the Southwest through Northwest.

David 15.12.2024 22:56:48

My timer quit or I could have stayed longer.

Peter 15.12.2024 18:18:27

... and of course you had 20 minutes left so no need to fly home at that time

Peter 15.12.2024 18:01:07

Sorry David, I then misinterpreted the track. Of course you needed height to come back on the hill, see it now in 3D. Good that the laptop as map works

David 15.12.2024 14:50:16

 Great flight ,Brad.

Peter, I knew where the field was, but finding lift was hard. I used my laptop as a map, worked real good.

Peter 15.12.2024 09:15:25

Great flight, Brad. I promised good conditions. I should stop promising anything ;-)

Peter 15.12.2024 08:45:58

Good flight David. I see it's not so easy to find home to Bad Pyrmont, so I made two pictures about the easiest approach in my opinion. If you come from the west there is a very good visible pass through forest regions, marked with a red circle in the first picture. The pass shows in the direction of the airport. From that point there are 10 kilometers to go. Heading the airport best to the arrow in the picture below, it's south from the runway and the lowest place for a squirrel approach. The airport is on top of the hill to the left. Hope it helps ApproachBadPyrmont.png - ApproachBadPyrmont.png

David 14.12.2024 20:24:49

I will defiinately buy the ASK when it comes out.

Peter 14.12.2024 17:24:06

Yes, welcome MG2, hope to see more flights from you. If you have any question, please ask.

I like the SF28, brilliant how Condor simulates it's behavior.

This season I wanted to fly all planes, next season I will focus only on a few. DG100 will be my plane for LS3 category, SF28 for Blanik. Not sure yet for Cirrus, maybe Libelle or Cirrus.

Have thought about OneDesign. Flying always the Baby can be hard. Of course it's the perfect plane for Vintage, but I was thinking about Cirrus with ballast. What do you think?

Next year will come some very nice new planes, f.x. ASK13, Fauvel, Pirat. Maybe I will fly then more different planes than planned today. Will see ;-)

Brad 14.12.2024 15:23:17

Welcome MG2! Good to have another joining the scoresheet!

I think your SF-28 looks great, Peter, inside and outside. It sounds like you plan to, and will, have many enjoyable flights with it!

Dave, I agree that the 1-26 in challenging conditions, when lift is widely spaced, is very tricky. The only real goal when that happens is staying in the air! If you can do that, then the time and distance takes care of itself. I know, easier said than done! ;-)

David 14.12.2024 15:00:23

Yes , seems the lift was weak.Finger Lakes has higher elevation, lifts are further apart and the 1-26 doesn’t have the glide ratio to get from one to the other. Must deviate a lot. Might try later next month.

Peter 14.12.2024 08:59:49

Saw your flight, David. Looks like very challenging conditions. Average climbrate 1 m/s and outlanding after less than 30 minutes. Of course I expected something different. So I will try it on Thursday. When I compared C2 with C3, C3 looked better, so I reduced one setting (maybe activity), cloud density was similar then.

David 13.12.2024 15:00:41

Congrats to MG2 for your flight, welcome to VSC.

Peter 12.12.2024 16:03:31

They are made of an elastic but stable plastic, they bend but do not break. I think it's a kind of silicon

David 12.12.2024 14:53:30

How do those outrigger wheels work? Without breaking off?

Peter 12.12.2024 12:12:24

isn't it lovely?
Shot31.jpg - Shot31.jpg

Peter 12.12.2024 06:48:57

Thanks guys! The SF28 is the second plane I bought on the first day (first one was the Ka6CR), waited very long to get it. I really like it, it's for sure not competitive, but it's just fun for me. It feels like real flying in my old days, not compensated vario (easy to change, but I will not do it) and finally a plane from Scheibe, like the loved L-Spatz. The flight yesterday on a Wednesday was planned before, because I can't fly tonight, the new plane came just in time. Created a new pilot with the same CN but another sign, because German gliders have a number (like my D-6266), but motorgliders have 4 characters, beginning with K (D-K...). It's the same with the DG800, but the SF28 I couldn't fly with the number ;-).
Have to work a little bit with the panel and try to fly it better, but the flight yesterdays wasn't that bad
Shot35.jpg - Shot35.jpg

DAVID GEO ROMBACH 12.12.2024 02:44:57

Well done in the new ship

Brad 12.12.2024 02:37:38

Nice double seater flight with your new SF-28, Peter, well done!

Peter 09.12.2024 06:31:42

When flying in the mountains I use the maps-for-free.com maps to print the flight plan (some older landscapes have a "ReliefAndWater" map, that is a maps-for-free.com map added water, the newer landscapes have water included in maps-for-free.com), I think that is easier. If you don't have this maps, on the download side for the landscapes you find for every landscape a button "Download ... Maps", the bmp file is to copy into the folder of the landscape. On flat land I use the standard map and navigate only by the landscape colors, the shapes of the fields, forests and lakes. The European landscapes are better in that case, because there is more difference in the colors, maybe that are autumn images

David 08.12.2024 23:22:26

Yes I print the flight plan and it’s very dark. I my try to transfer them to tablet. What I may do is enlarge it and use a laptop to view it. If in the USA , I use vfrmaps.com.

Peter 08.12.2024 18:02:00

I only use the printed flight plan as map. If you don't have a good printer, can you use the flight plan as pdf on your tablet?

David 08.12.2024 15:18:00

Good flight Brad, most excellent. Yes navigation is a big issue , especially with me, as I am not familiar with Germany and have no decent maps.

Peter 08.12.2024 12:06:37

Thanks, Brad, and well done too. Looks like a little advantage in Condor 3 this time, but that were only the first flights, until end of January is a long time to find out, what is best.

Brad 08.12.2024 07:39:12

Good Libelle flight, Peter, well done! The "Return" task is a good one that allows you to follow the clouds. Navigation becomes important as you need to keep track of where you are in relation to the return point. Now, if we can get the clouds to cooperate! ;-)

Peter 06.12.2024 14:58:00

I chose for the final task the easiest task type, the "return". I like triangles where start and finish are in the middle of one leg, but I don't have a task for that. Therefor I often fly such a figure in return tasks. Return task calculates over 5 turn points

David 06.12.2024 14:38:10

Sorry , mis read the post.

David 06.12.2024 14:33:43

I did not know the task was a triangle, thought it was out and return.

Peter 06.12.2024 03:26:15

Thanks. It's a nice task, thermals not too bombastic,  feels very realistic

David 06.12.2024 01:35:34

Nice flight, Peter . Was it tough?

Peter 05.12.2024 18:32:05

No pressure, Brad, it's first of all fun we are looking for. Tonight I will start it with a Libelle flight

Brad 05.12.2024 05:43:54

Thank you for the analysis, Peter. It is definitely a difficult thing you are asking me to accomplish for the tie. None the less, I shall give it my best and we shall see how it turns out. It has been a challenging year with all the variation in locations, tasks, and conditions. With all we've done this year, it has been fun to meet the challenges and try our best. Thank you for your continued management of the Vintage Series!

Peter 04.12.2024 13:53:51

Some thoughts to the last task. All categories are decided, there is no change of the leader possible. But the championship is still open.

Today I have 1242 points, Brad 1230. If Brad wins 3 categories in task K he will get 180 points. Then in best case I only can win one category and get two 2nd places. That gives max 168 points. Over all Brad can replace 168 points by 180, with 168 points I can't increase my result. So Brad will get 12 points more and we have a tie, 1242 points both.

The rule for a tie says, that the best flight of the most flown category will decide the winner. Today the most flown category is Cirrus (see "Best flights by series", 37 flights so far in Cirrus), best flights on top of the list are my Libelle flight with 240 points and second my ASK21 flight with 227 points. The Libelle flight was with 105 minutes time limit, but the ASK21 with 90 minutes time limit. Because it's not fair IMHO while we fly 90 minutes now, I will ignore the Libelle flight in case of a tie, top flight in this category for that calculation is the ASK21 flight with 227,31 points.

I cross the fingers for you, Brad. Three categories to win and more than 227,31 points in the Cirrus, if nothing changes on that list is your aim for this task. Good luck!

But don't expect that I will make it easy, I only need the best 90 minutes flight in Cirrus ;-)

Peter 30.11.2024 13:18:50

We will not have an organized C2 multi player flight in December, but I would like to try a two seater, David asked for. Please pick a Thursday and we take a Blanik or an ASK 21.You can choose a start airport too, then I create a flight plan and let it run on a server. Because I have the head tracker, I would prefer to fly as the navigator on the back seat. I guess that will become an interesting experience

Peter 30.11.2024 13:11:50

Task K is open now
