Peter 03.07.2025 08:13:53Amazing flight with the empty Cirrus, Brad. Congratulations! After the ballasted flight I expected you will make it very good without ballast, but with that margin is brilliant
Oh my! Gliders certainly need their wings! ;-)
Thank you, Peter. It seems if you can fly without circling, you can go faster! ;-) The tow pilot did not help and left me to pray that I could make it to the ridges...I did, but it left me lower and slower than I wanted to start the task. I knew I had to extend my second leg, based on where the tow ended, to make up distance. Overall, I felt good about the flight...but I'm not sure there is anyway to beat your DG101 flight...you fly that glider very well! I was close to losing wings after leaving the hills and trying to make up some time. ;-)
Great flight with the Cirrus and ballast, very close to your best ASW20 flight. Well done!
I remember my first Cirrus flight with ballast, it was at the Cirrus Cup, organized by VSC maybe 4 years ago. I crossed the start line without wings, because I lost them flying too fast right before :-D
Yes, that was a good flight with ballast, Dave, well done!
Peter, your latest ballasted flight is spectacular, congratulations!
Thanks. That was one of the flights were you are still smiling the day after. It went very well and was just fun. Finally I was nearly at the ground a few kilometers too early but found a very strong lift saving the flight.
Thanks to Brad for that fantastic route, I haven't seen it myself
Ha ha, I know how those exploratory flights go, Dave...sometimes, once you start, you can't stop! ;-) And now, you have better understanding of the area and will make it home next time. Yes, the lift is tricky on this one. I have found some lying clouds and, with the wind, thermals aren't always straight forward to maintain your climb. Staying in sync with the lift is certainly a part of the challenge.
Thank you, Peter, it was fun, but did require paying close attention to details.
congrats on a good flight, well done
Things are always good, in theory (on paper)! ;-) I agree that the two categories was not bad. Happy to continue with it.
Task E is started now, task D will be finished tomorrow ca. 10 a.m. local time (8 a.m. UTC).
We will have a mountain task again, as always with task type "2 turn points" (the triangle). Wind is a little bit less then task C, the last mountain task, but higher clouds and better thermals (on the paper, you never know ... ;-) ).We will see how it works.
Example flight plan starts on CascadiaCS (or CascadiaCS3) at Abbotsford, of course as always you can fly where you want.
I think the experiment with only two categories (ballast and no ballast) was not too bad, so I will continue with it in task E too.
Good luck to all!
