Season 2025 task E

Peter 03.07.2025 08:13:53

Amazing flight with the empty Cirrus, Brad. Congratulations! After the ballasted flight I expected you will make it very good without ballast, but with that margin is brilliant

Brad 27.06.2025 01:25:00

 Thank you, Dave.

david 26.06.2025 19:55:51

very good flight. Brad  you did well in the Cirrus.

Brad 26.06.2025 17:08:28

Oh my! Gliders certainly need their wings! ;-)

Thank you, Peter. It seems if you can fly without circling, you can go faster! ;-) The tow pilot did not help and left me to pray that I could make it to the ridges...I did, but it left me lower and slower than I wanted to start the task. I knew I had to extend my second leg, based on where the tow ended, to make up distance. Overall, I felt good about the flight...but I'm not sure there is anyway to beat your DG101 flight...you fly that glider very well! I was close to losing wings after leaving the hills and trying to make up some time. ;-)

Peter 26.06.2025 16:18:25

Great flight with the Cirrus and ballast, very close to your best ASW20 flight. Well done!

I remember my first Cirrus flight with ballast, it was at the Cirrus Cup, organized by VSC maybe 4 years ago. I crossed the start line without wings, because I lost them flying too fast right before :-D

Peter 22.06.2025 17:04:19

There was a little lift in the final glide, got maybe 50 m height including pulling, a short place with climbing. It was gone when I tried to circle, so I continued without circling. These few meters more height saved the flight. A little bit too exciting, but ended well ... ;-)

david 22.06.2025 13:30:55

 you barely squeaked in.

Peter 22.06.2025 00:30:40

Thanks, that was a flight where everything worked better than expected. The tug pilot was a good friend and towed me on a perfect start place, and from there I flew nearly straight with only 2 lifts of 6 minutes duration. But on final glide I got again a strong sinking, didn't believed I will come home. Established "Peters Roof Cleaning Service" at that flight ;-), dropped all water for to get a lower stall speed and maybe a few centimeters better lift if there will come something, but I'm not sure if that was the best tactic. Finally I survived and landed with tail wind, had to fly around the hangar

Brad 21.06.2025 23:14:41

Yes, that was a good flight with ballast, Dave, well done!

Peter, your latest ballasted flight is spectacular, congratulations!

Peter 19.06.2025 22:35:25

In the mountains I always use the "maps-for-free" map, it has to be downloaded separately

David 19.06.2025 21:03:21

Dint go the route I wanted , but I’ll take it.

Peter 19.06.2025 20:14:45

Good flight with the LS3, David, good climb rate with the ballasted plane and well back home. Hope you enjoyed it. I like the landscape there

Brad 16.06.2025 14:57:29

Thanks guys, it feels like the '20 works well for this task...and, of course, the occasional piece of luck to go with it. ;-)

David 15.06.2025 16:10:41

Excellent flight Brad , good speed.

Peter 15.06.2025 04:10:15

Oh, I see another good one with the 20, well done Brad. It's an exciting task

Peter 15.06.2025 04:01:27

Good luck with the Cirrus (I forgot to write)

Peter 15.06.2025 02:33:34

My calculation said, I was high enough to reach the airport after leaving the mountains, but I got a lot of sinking there, so I needed that lift and I got in the last moment. Was very lucky not to loose that flight. Maybe the calculation was wrong with the strong wind, 50 % more in C3 than in C2

Brad 14.06.2025 23:39:53

Great no ballast flight, Peter! Yes, looks like just a bit short until your saved it, well done! I'll need to try that with the Cirrus.

Dave 14.06.2025 00:59:24

Excellent flight Peter, twice as good as mine!

Peter 13.06.2025 15:15:42

Thanks. That was one of the flights were you are still smiling the day after. It went very well and was just fun. Finally I was nearly at the ground a few kilometers too early but found a very strong lift saving the flight.

Thanks to Brad for that fantastic route, I haven't seen it myself

Dave 13.06.2025 15:06:29

Excellent flight Peter, twice as good as mine!

Brad 10.06.2025 17:37:38

Ha ha, I know how those exploratory flights go, Dave...sometimes, once you start, you can't stop! ;-) And now, you have better understanding of the area and will make it home next time. Yes, the lift is tricky on this one. I have found some lying clouds and, with the wind, thermals aren't always straight forward to maintain your climb. Staying in sync with the lift is certainly a part of the challenge.

Thank you, Peter, it was fun, but did require paying close attention to details.

Peter 10.06.2025 16:38:59

The LS3 is great to fly with ballast

David 10.06.2025 16:12:30

It started out as an exploratory flight, just to see how conditions are. Lift was strong if you hit it right. At the end, really didn’t know where I was exactly. I don’t know how lift will be with full ballast, we shall see.

Peter 10.06.2025 15:54:29

Saw right now Brads great flight, this track seems to be the best one so far. Very well done!

Brad 10.06.2025 15:31:50

Yes, good work, David! I think the conditions for this task are very challenging for the 'no ballast' class. Thank you for being brave and posting the first flight for that class!

Peter 10.06.2025 13:39:05

Great flight, David. Very tough to have fought your way through the mountains and go down on the flat part with a strong tailwind

Peter 06.06.2025 06:25:37

Thanks, yes it was good. Was surprised about the 185 points, guessed something about 150 due to the long flight time ;-)
It started really bad, was nearly at the ground before I could do anything, didn't expected to get a lift so low in the strong wind, but that saved me to the ridge. And that ridge worked well despite all say in C3 ridges don't work if you are low. After that the flight was very interesting and fun, but slower than expected. Here a nice view

Brad 06.06.2025 04:28:45

I understand how you feel, Peter. Your flight turned out well though, good work!

David 06.06.2025 04:19:31

Good plan , your flight looked good .

Peter 06.06.2025 02:01:51

Thanks, was an exciting flight, much harder than expected. But found the way through an amazing landscape, was really fun

David 06.06.2025 01:22:49

Good plan , your flight looked good .

Peter 05.06.2025 05:26:18

Thanks, will see if my plan is a good one ;-)

Brad 05.06.2025 00:15:54

Good luck with your Thursday flight, Peter! I too have made a different route to try.

Brad 03.06.2025 23:57:39

Thanks guys. Yes, an interesting track indeed, things got a little interesting in the mountains. Knowing I wanted to go to the mountains, the tow plane took me the other way! :-O

david 03.06.2025 06:16:23

congrats on a good flight, well done

Peter 03.06.2025 06:06:47

Very good flight, Brad, and interesting track. I have prepared a very different route for my flight on Thursday, will see, how that works

David 03.06.2025 03:39:55

 Sounds ok to me

Brad 03.06.2025 00:07:04

Things are always good, in theory (on paper)! ;-)  I agree that the two categories was not bad. Happy to continue with it.

Peter 31.05.2025 16:20:26

Task E is started now, task D will be finished tomorrow ca. 10 a.m. local time (8 a.m. UTC).

We will have a mountain task again, as always with task type "2 turn points" (the triangle). Wind is a little bit less then task C, the last mountain task, but higher clouds and better thermals (on the paper, you never know ... ;-) ).We will see how it works.

Example flight plan starts on CascadiaCS (or CascadiaCS3) at Abbotsford, of course as always you can fly where you want.

I think the experiment with only two categories (ballast and no ballast) was not too bad, so I will continue with it in task E too.

Good luck to all!
