Thank you , Peter. I tried to use your flight track . I printed it from See You , but to no avail.
Nice
Thanks Brad. I now have delivered, the hunting is open ;-). Very interesting task, but for me I don't see the possibility to improve more. I'm very happy with all of my flights. So if I find a slot to fly (I don't believe it, but you never know), I will fly an "Others" plane, Discus or Ventus3-15 will be the favorites. Will see.
Interesting Baby flight Brad, always difficult to fly a Baby with (or better said against) the wind. Well done!
Yes, Avelina is back! Good to see her post a flight! Nice route through the valleys, Dave. What, no desire for a "death dive"!? :-D
Thanks guys. Yes, I couldn't stop flying after having reached the end of the ridge, then just kept going because I was having a good time. I knew that last bit would be all out speed down through the canyon and some spoilers out to make it to the field at a reasonable altitude for landing...ha ha, "death dive" might be a good description but I was not in any danger. ;-) I am encouraged by the result enough to try the other way around to see what difference the wind makes on leg 2 and not having to "death dive" on leg 3.
Great fun to be exploring the area this way!
That will be interesting how fast this route will be with an ASW20, let's try to take the best out of it. I worry most about to take a too short course and being home too early. The AAT rule allows to fly longer without being penalized. For to get the same points like my ASK21 flight ca. 190 km are needed in 90 minutes, but I wouldn't plan shorter than 210 kilometers, best more (210 km in 90 minutes = 140 km/h, 240 km in 90 minutes = 160 km/h, but 240 km in 102 minutes = 140 km/h, so only 12 minutes more). Think it goes faster than expected and you are home after 85 minutes. You can't correct that after tp2 on a 2 turn points. For the ASK21 flight I planned 195 km, got only 188 because of the place, the tow plane towed me, but I was clear over that a flight below 2 hours would be fast enough. So I still like the AAT rule without having the need to be back at exactly the right time, and that flight was the first one I didn't used a stop watch. I only enjoyed it ...
It will be very exciting. Good luck!
Thank you for the OneDesign comments. You know how we like to be close!
The flight started slow and with a deviation for clouds...considered abandoning the flight at that point, but thought "might as well see how it goes from here." Things got going better after the initial deviation and found some good climbs. I figured if it worked going one way, it should work going the other! The big decision was the same as we have in an O&R...when to turn back. I also figured I would not have the trees or squirrels in the way if I approached the target from the North. ;-)
Peter, you are now thinking was I was thinking, try the ASW20 on that route you took with the ASK21.
Thanks. Yes, that ridge works very well, flew first a very short test flight (airborn) from Trieben and it was better than expected. So I guess that route is the best one for this task. Leg 1 is only ridge, leg 3 too. The leg to win or loose is leg 2. I came too low to a ridge there and had to fly around. Finding a lift before that ridge will give a better speed. I only can recommend to try that route. Next Sunday I maybe will have a slot to try the ASW20 on that route.
Nice OneDesign flight, Brad, interesting course. Well done!
For sure that was very low, unfortunately I wasn't able to make a screenshot before I knew I will survive ... There were only trees around me. The hill falls down a little bit to the right, so I followed the right side, that gave me the few meters I needed.
Have seen such an approach IRL 1980, a guy from our club in an S-18 vintage glider from another club, nobody guessed he will make it, but it went well for him too
Thanks, will start today, weather is far away from good, cold and a lot of rain, but if I don't do it now, it will not happen this year
Good luck with the flights, the Alps task seems to be more difficult than expected, especially navigation wasn't easy for me on my first two flights. But interesting nevertheless
Loved the video, that’s vintage sailplanes.
Yes, good old times :-D
