task D

Brad 03.06.2024 05:59:58

Thank you for introducing me to the Northern route, I really like it! But for now, we're off to other tasks! ;-)

Peter 01.06.2024 11:00:40

David 31.05.2024 14:48:23

I saw it tooo, well done

Peter 31.05.2024 08:25:21

Nice second try, Brad, well done. I like this course

David 28.05.2024 17:04:17

another fine one in the books

Peter 28.05.2024 14:49:31

Another nice try with the ASW20, Brad, looks good!

Peter 26.05.2024 08:03:35

Thanks, yes, and I will do it with the next flight too

David 26.05.2024 07:00:50

Another good one Peter , you went north this time.

Peter 26.05.2024 06:21:29

Thanks, it was the course I wanted to fly at the first flight

Brad 26.05.2024 06:08:30

Ah, I see that...and another very good flight! Well done, congratulations, Peter!

Peter 26.05.2024 04:26:10

 I alrrady have ;-)

Brad 26.05.2024 03:22:41

Thank you...but I got low and slow on the second leg and couldn't recover in time to make a better triangle. Good luck, Peter! I'm sure you will do fine with your LS4. ;-) Go, Dave, go!

David 24.05.2024 22:20:50

That was a good one as well.  I might do that on Thurs

Peter 24.05.2024 19:06:48

Very good flight with the ASW20 Brad, I couldn't fly yesterday, but it looks good for two flights on weekend, one will be LS4, the other one a last try with the Baby. Will see what I'm able to achieve

Peter 24.05.2024 04:38:50

 Yes, well done Dave

David 24.05.2024 02:08:07

one time of final glide , one turn to make it back

Brad 24.05.2024 00:18:45

Nice flight with the Cirrus today, Dave, well done! It looks like there was only a little circling at the beginning but none after that, pretty neat!

Peter 22.05.2024 00:45:48

Stupid me was towed into the valley to the East like you, but I decided to fly the next valley to the West where I started the last flight. It could have been much easier ... :-D

Brad 22.05.2024 00:33:14

Thanks guys. Love those pictures, Peter! Flying high in the Baby upwind at altitude for any distance is difficult on this task. Even at lower altitudes, flying upwind is a challenge because of the drift while thermalling. I tried to only take the altitude needed to get to the next ridge when needing to go directly into the wind. The second leg was not directly into the wind and surprising to find a fair amount of wave lift; picture from that leg in wave pointed towards turnpoint #2. Final glide with the altitude on leg 2 was no problem with a tail wind! The reason I started to the East was because that is where the tow plane took me...I was planning on going North! ;-) Baby_Wave_ZellAmZee.jpg - Baby_Wave_ZellAmZee.jpg

David 21.05.2024 15:26:34

real nice , kept it high

Peter 21.05.2024 08:31:26

Very nice flight Brad, your course is a little bit more to the East than on my two tries, so you took the way back through the same valley I used, but got a valid triangle. Very well done, congratulations

Peter 21.05.2024 06:37:54

No safety margin when finally crossing the mountain too fare to the East Shot35.jpg - Shot35.jpg

Peter 21.05.2024 06:32:24

The second picture shows a nice shadow while I'm fighting for to survive ;-) Shot33.jpg - Shot33.jpg

Peter 21.05.2024 06:31:45

After my second attempt to fly the triangle with the Baby in the south region, I declare that planned course for impossible. This time I took care of the height, without cloud flying I flow over the clouds, 5000 m high on leg 2, should be enough to fly to tp2 and home. But I only fall from the sky. Realized too late that I flew against the upper wind of 65 km/h maybe with 20 km/h over ground, falling 3-4 m/s. It seems to be easier to cast a stone over the mountain then to fly the Baby with that circumstances. Have had a very hart fight to come home, but did it after 2:12 hours. Result of this flight are new experiences and some nice pictures. The first pictures shows the Baby in 5000 m over the clouds Shot31.jpg - Shot31.jpg

Brad 19.05.2024 06:04:26

I agree with you, David, you've got to try it! :-)

david 17.05.2024 23:22:20

 got to try that

Dave 17.05.2024 23:20:25

Yes those flights were squeky close

Peter 17.05.2024 21:57:19

Thanks for the picture, the link and the report. On my flight yesterday I made only one picture, I was too busy too

Brad 17.05.2024 21:32:17

Well, Peter, you know how I like keeping point totals close! ;-)   Interesting is a good word to use when taking the Baby into the mountains!   As you see, I tried using thermals into the wind then up into the mountains next. The thermals, or at least the clouds showing thermals didn't line up very well, so it took some time on the first leg. Going up the mountain wasn't too bad, until near the top, then I ran out of much space between cloud base and mountain tops...not favorable for the Baby. Didn't get a picture of that since I was busy figuring out which way to go. I was also happy to see my friends back at the airport!   I remembered I had a picture of an actual Grunau Baby hanging from the ceiling at the National Air & Space Museum's Udvar-Hazy Center; the picture is from a trip there earlier this year.  Grunau Baby.jpg - Grunau Baby.jpg

Peter 17.05.2024 19:41:31

Interesting flight with the Baby in the "Highlands", Brad, and you beat me by 0,7 points. Very cool, well done ;-)

I'm looking for a slot to repeat my flight, not sure if I will find one

Peter 17.05.2024 06:31:52

It went very well in the south, only this last mountain. The ridge before was in the wrong direction for the wind, and there was no cloud. Until that the whole flight was without any circle, low speed but always continuing. And I was happy with my navigation. I always was on the planned track, although I often wasn't sure about that. And as you said most important, I came home. All in all it was an interesting flight, nice landscap with high mountains with a good post-flight beverage ;-) Shot10.jpg - Shot10.jpg

Brad 17.05.2024 03:37:37

That is an unfortunate situation for you, Peter. I like that you took the Baby into the high country though. I wondered how that might work with the lower performance of the Baby and those high ridges to cross or get around. I may try a Baby flight up there too...just for some fun. At least you didn't leave your Baby on the side of a mountain! Welcome home, enjoy your post-flight beverage of choice!

Peter 16.05.2024 22:52:30

No, the Baby Shampoo wasn't good :-D

Needed 300/400 m more height to come over one last mountain, had to turn for to survive, but destroyed the flight

Peter 16.05.2024 17:49:52

I will try this, Summer virtual Baby Shampoo :-D BabyShampoo.png - BabyShampoo.png

Brad 16.05.2024 16:54:35

Thanks guys. Yes, went South again, Dave...I just find myself drawn in that direction. Peter, I knew I need more speed and the only way to get it was full ballast. However, I struggled a bit at the start with the extra weight, and the lack of a good thermal nearby. But once going, things weren't too bad. Struggled again mid-way through second leg trying to get over some mountains and thought I was too far out for the final glide based on time, but it turned out OK. So much difference between flying the Baby and a fully ballasted ASW20!

Good luck with the Baby today!

David 16.05.2024 15:30:21

Excellent flight in deed, you went south again

Peter 16.05.2024 08:27:28

Amazing flight with the ASW 20, Brad. After my LS4 flight I calculated that you will need a speed of 140 km/h or faster. Guessed it will not happen, but you did it. Fantastic. For sure because you finally flew full ballasted. Congratulations!

But: This month has 5 Thursdays and I had planned to fly an "Other" flight with the Discus, so I change that plan to another LS4 try next week (today the Baby is already prepared) ;-)

I cross the fingers for you, I like more a close fight than to win, but I don't give up now :-D

Peter 13.05.2024 22:43:03

Nice picture too, I think it's the best way for the final glide, a 60 km valley

Brad 13.05.2024 21:18:09

Thanks guys. Yes, I was very surprised by the speed. I like your screenshot of "the valley" on final glide. That position looks very familiar to me...see mine from the Cirrus. Cirrus_ZellAmZee.jpg - Cirrus_ZellAmZee.jpg

Dave 13.05.2024 14:52:40

extremely fast in the Cirrus , good job

Peter 13.05.2024 08:29:24

Great flight with the Cirrus, Brad, very well done! Looks like you was surprised by your own speed. I thought I made worse weather, but conditions seems to be very good

Peter 12.05.2024 18:36:56

Thanks, yes it was very fast and funny

Dave 12.05.2024 16:42:49

Very good flight , looks like fast speeds

Peter 12.05.2024 06:44:57

ok, big screenshots seems not to work ;-) Shot3.jpg - Shot3.jpg

Peter 12.05.2024 06:43:29

Thanks, yes, was a very nice flight. Missed my planned first turn point by ca. 20 km, came out too far to the East, but "Großer Pölven" saved the flight, it's a very good orientation point. After a strong lift at tp2 I had a very fast final glide.  It was my first flight on the series with the LS4, it's the first Condor plane I bought   [IMAGE] Starting the final glide, 66 km to go

Brad 12.05.2024 06:16:56

Outstanding flight, Peter! Very well done with a spectacular finish! ;)

David 11.05.2024 16:40:29

Great pic , better w/o canopy

Peter 11.05.2024 16:33:28

Great picture Brad, thanks. Haven't tried a picture until now, cool it opens direct in the frame by clicking on it.

To set in a screenshot is possible too, only paste the clipboard into the text area (worked a long night to get the result into the document ;-). I'm first of all not a web designer, so the learning curve is steep, but need parts of it at the job, so a win win situation ... )

Thanks to you and Dave for accepting this forum.

Anonymous 11.05.2024 15:42:44

Thank you. Yes, it was fun for sure. The Northern are is interesting with a mix of hills and mountains to work with. As usual, with the lower performance gliders wind speed and angle come into play more. Here's a picture of Zell Am Zee from the North as I was coming home. Baby_ZellAmZee.jpg - Baby_ZellAmZee.jpg

David 11.05.2024 14:56:56

Good flight , looks like you had fun

Peter 11.05.2024 08:20:35

Great flight with the Baby, Brad, well done!
